Adepero Oduye portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

THE OSCAR-NOMINATED SHORT FILMS 2012

2011 – International – Not Rated

These three feature-length programs include nearly all of this year’s nominated films, plus additional animated titles that were short-listed for this year’s awards.

VIEW TRAILER

OSCAR-NOMINATED ANIMATED SHORTS PROGRAM

Animated – 2011 – International – 79 minutes - Not Rated

Sunday/Dimanche – 10 minutes – English – Patrick Doyon
Every Sunday, it’s the same old routine! The train clatters through the village and almost shakes the pictures off the wall. In the church, Dad dreams about his toolbox. And of course later Grandma will get a visit and the animals will meet their fate.
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore – 15 minutes – No Dialogue – William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg
Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/illustrator William Joyce and co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and MGM Technicolor musicals. Morris Lessmore is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.
La Luna – 7 minutes – English – Enrico Casaroasa
A fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big surprise awaits the little boy as he discovers his family’s most unusual line of work.
A Morning Stroll – 7 minutes – No Dialogue – Grant Orchard and Sue Goffe
When a New Yorker walks past a chicken on his morning stroll, we’re left to wonder which one is the real city slicker.
Wild Life – 13 minutes – English – Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby
Calgary, 1909: an Englishman moves to the Canadian frontier, but is singularly unsuited to it. His letters home are much sunnier than the reality. Intertitles compare his fate to that of a comet.

FOUR EXTRA ANIMATED FILMS FROM THE ACADEMY SHORT-LIST HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS PROGRAM AS WELL, THEY ARE:

Skylight
The Hybrid Union
Nullarbor
Amazonia

OSCAR NOMINATED LIVE ACTION SHORTS PROGRAM

Live Action – 2011 – International – 107 minutes – Not Rated

Pentecost – 11 minutes – English – Peter McDonald and Eimear O’Kane
When Damian is forced to serve as an altar boy at an important mass in his local parish, he faces a difficult choice: conform to the status quo, or serve an extended ban from his life’s passion – football.
Raju – 24 minutes – English/German – Max Zähle and Stefan Gieren
Director Max Zaehle, together with his Director of Photography Sin Huh, and wonderful actors Wotan Wilke Möhring and Julia Richter, succeed at making the moral dilemma faced by couples wishing to adopt emotionally palpable.
The Shore – 31 minutes – English/Gaelic – Terry George and Oorlagh George
After 25 years in exile, Jim Mahon (Ciaran Hinds) returns to Ireland to show his American daughter Patty (Kerry Condon) his Belfast roots. But things don’t go as planned when she learns of a secret love triangle and a long lost best friend, Paddy (Conleth Hill). Their reconciliation leads to hilarious confusion. Directed by two time Oscar nominee Terry George, The Shore won Best Director and Best Actor at the Rhode Island Film Festival, and is nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award.
Time Freak – 11 minutes – English – Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey
A neurotic inventor creates a time machine, only to get caught up travelling around yesterday.
Tuba Atlantic – 25 minutes – Norwegian – Hallvar Witzø
Everybody is going to die one day. Oskar, 70, is going to die in 6 days. He is now ready to forgive his brother for a disagreement years ago. Will he reach his brother, who he believes live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, before it’s too late?

OSCAR-NOMINATED DOCUMENTARY PROGRAM:

Documentary – 2011 – International – 130 minutes – Not Rated

In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoeshiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.

Lt. Colonel Nascimento (Wagner Moura) is Captain of BOPE, Brazil’s badass elite military squad. Everything that happens on a BOPE mission is Nascimento’s full responsibility. During a rescue mission at Bangu 1, the most violent penitentiary in Rio de Janeiro, one of his squad leaders follows his training and shoots a murderous and vicious prisoner to death. Most rejoice at this except for one man, a famous Human Rights activist in Brazil (Diogo Fraga) who just so happened to be on the scene in the middle of the action.

As time passes, Nascimento is relieved of command and, due to become highly popular among the people, gets promoted to Secretary of Security department, and Fraga becomes State Representative. Soon both discover a world of corrupt politics and dirty cops, abusing the vulnerability of the poor living in extreme poverty. Even though sworn enemies, Nascimento and Fraga inadvertently work together to peel back the layers of corruption in pursuit of the truth.

You don’t have to be versed in the original film (also great by the way). Elite Squad: The Enemy Within jumps right in with enough context and back story for the audience to jump in and hit the ground running. And run you will, Elite Squad 2 ranks up there as one of the all-time great crime thrillers, perfectly balanced with strong characters, genuine human emotion, gritty violent action and a zippy full-tilt pace. Imagine GOODFELLAS with less narration and an afro-Brazilian backbeat.

Simmering marital tensions and unexpected complications weigh heavily on the conscience of a seasoned contract killer in this dark thriller from Down Terrace director Ben Wheatley. An ex-soldier in desperate need of work, Jay (Neil Maskell) is hosting a dinner party with his wife, Shel (MyAnna Buring), when the conversation with guests Gal (Michael Smiley) and Fiona (Emma Fryer) turns suddenly combative. In the aftermath of the incident, Gal proposes to Jay that they both earn a hearty payday by accepting a few well-timed contract jobs. Meanwhile, as the pair go to work getting a lock on their targets, Jay finds himself increasingly distracted by domestic issues and his growing desire to be a good father. Jay’s paternal instincts drive him to violent extremes, however, when he makes a shocking discovery about one of the men on his list. Later, after finding a new tool to get the job done, the details of Jay’s latest assignment begin to take on deeply ominous undertones.

Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard ranks among the most scathing satires of Hollywood and the cruel fickleness of movie fandom. The story begins at the end as the body of Joe Gillis (William Holden) is fished out of a Hollywood swimming pool. From The Great Beyond, Joe details the circumstances of his untimely demise (originally, the film contained a lengthy prologue wherein the late Mr. Gillis told his tale to his fellow corpses in the city morgue, but this elicited such laughter during the preview that Wilder changed it). Hotly pursued by repo men, impoverished, indebted “boy wonder” screenwriter Gillis ducks into the garage of an apparently abandoned Sunset Boulevard mansion. Wandering into the spooky place, Joe encounters its owner, imperious silent star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Upon learning Joe’s profession, Norma inveigles him into helping her with a comeback script that she’s been working on for years. Joe realizes that the script is hopeless, but the money is good and he has nowhere else to go. Soon the cynical and opportunistic Joe becomes Norma’s kept man. While they continue collaborating, Norma’s loyal and protective chauffeur Max Von Mayerling (played by legendary filmmaker Erich von Stroheim) contemptuously watches from a distance. More melodramatic than funny, the screenplay by Wilder and Charles Brackett began life as a comedy about a has-been silent movie actress and the ambitious screenwriter who leeches off her. (Wilder originally offered the film to Mae West, Mary Pickford and Pola Negri. Montgomery Clift was the first choice for the part of opportunistic screenwriter Joe Gillis, but he refused, citing as “disgusting” the notion of a 25-year-old man being kept by a 50-year-old woman.) Arguably the greatest movie about Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard is a tremendously entertaining combination of noir, black comedy, and character study.

From the shifting faultlines of Hollywood fantasies and the economic and racial tensions of Reagan’s America, Fishbone rose to become one of the most original bands of the last 25 years. With a blistering combination of punk and funk they demolished the walls of genre and challenged the racial stereotypes and political order of the music industry and the nation. Telling it like it is, the iconic Laurence Fishburne narrates EVERYDAY SUNSHINE, a story about music, history, fear, courage and funking on the one.

At the heart of the film’s story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling out of pride, desperation and love for their art. To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past.

Featuring interviews with Flea, Gwen Stefani, Ice-T, Perry Farrell, Branford Marsalis, George Clinton, Tim Robbins, Gogol Bordello, ?uestlove, and others, EVERYDAY SUNSHINE traces the band’s history, influence, and struggle as individualistic, genre-blending artists up against an unforgiving music industry that threatens to pass them by.

From acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland, In Darkness is based on a true story. Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief in Lvov, a Nazi occupied city in Poland, one day encounters a group of Jews trying to escape the liquidation of the ghetto. He hides them for money in the labyrinth of the town’s sewers beneath the bustling activity of the city above. What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. The film is also an extraordinary story of survival as these men, women and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever increasing and intense danger.

The legendary erotic cabaret prides itself on the beauty of its women and the humor, fantasy and old-fashioned glitz that its productions lavish upon their seemingly flawless bodies. The show’s choreographer Philippe Decouflé argues passionately for more time to perfect his newest show, Désir, as Wiseman and his longtime cinematographer, John Davey, record every bump and grind, slither and slink — every sexual innuendo on stage, and now, on screen. A.O. Scott in The New York Times calls the film “a study of artistic process that is itself a work of art, and, as such, a reminder of what a documentary can be.” Wiseman has made the definitive sex-without-guilt movie.

Deep in the heart of Jakarta’s slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building’s lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city’s worst to survive their mission. Director Gareth Evans (Merantau, Monsters) and rising martial arts star Iko Uwais reunite in this adrenaline-fueled action film.
