Documentary – 2017 – USA – 121 Minutes – Unrated
Cinematographer Jake Swantko will present the Academy Award-winning documentary Icarus at Bijou Art Cinemas in Eugene on May 8, at 6 p.m. A question-and-answer session with Swantko, who served as director of photography and associate producer for the film, will immediately follow the screening. Icarus centers on renegade Russian scientist Grigory Rodchenkov, a key figure in his country’s state-sponsored Olympic doping program. In the film, Rodchenkov helps uncover one of the biggest sports scandals in history, putting his own life at risk. Icarus won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the 2017 Sundance Film Festival Orwell Award for revealing “the truth at a time when the truth is no longer a commodity.”
Swantko is a 2011 graduate of the UO School of Journalism and Communication. He has worked on several films and has photographed for the Associated Press, ESPN, HBO, and National Geographic.
